The purpose of this study is to develop a new method of correlating texture and power losses in soft magnetic materials. During the magnetization process, part of the loss could be attributed to the energy dissipation which takes place at the time of annihilation of domain walls. Domain walls appear and disappear when a ferromagnetic material is magnetized in a direction different from an easy magnetization direction. Starting from this model, we deduce analytical formulas which describe the anisotropy of the power loss in textured soft magnetic materials. The material’s texture is represented using the orientation distribution function. The validity of the model is tested by comparing the theoretical results with the experimental data obtained from a grain oriented 3% Si–Fe sample. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
