A novel array antenna is proposed for obtaining omnidirectional radiation pattern and is suitable for satellite and mobile communication applications. The method is based on application of the Bessel function to derive a new family of array current distribution to achieve omnidirectional pattern. The array provides a microstrip implementation of an omnidirectional antenna that is simple to design and inexpensive to fabricate. Simulated results for the rectangular microstrip patch array validate the present design technique. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
