Fading mitigation effect due to channel coding (FEC) is investigated mainly from a viewpoint of error randomization by interleaving. First, the measure of “burstiness of error” is defined, and coding performance with interleaving is evaluated by this measure. Based on the measure, a simple but effective estimation method of coding performance in Rayleigh fading is proposed, which only requires information on the AWGN performance of the code and interleave depth. The proposed method gives insights to the required interleave size for full FEC capability in a Rayleigh fading channel and to coding performance achieved with limited interleave size in practical applications. Finally, the overall performance including diversity is presented in a power controlled system, which demonstrates that power control has also an implicit error randomization effect especially in slow fading and that high-quality wireless communication over a fading channel can be achieved only with simultaneous use of various mitigation technologies
