This paper reports results of experimental investigations on the relationship between skew angle and achievable recording density. Work is focused on bit density, track density and error rate aspects. The obtained results indicate that large skew angle reduces achievable bit density of both near-isotropic and orientated media. Increased skew angle also increases bit-shift value, therefore reducing applicable recording density from a reliability viewpoint. However, increased skew angle can support higher track density, as the effective track width and the writing interference are reduced when the skew angle is large. For certain head-disk integration, the width of the erase profile can reduce at a faster rate compared with the width of the track profile
