Magnetic properties and structural characteristics of a novel Ce/sub 3/(Fe/sub 0.95/Ti/sub 0.05/)/sub 29/N/sub 4/ nitride

A new interstitial nitride Ce/sub 3/(Fe/sub 0.95/Ti/sub 0.05/)/sub 29/N/sub 4/ with Nd/sub 3/(Fe,Ti)/sub 29/-type structure has been synthesized. The X-ray pattern can be indexed according to the monoclinic space group A2/m and the unit cell dimensions are a=10.866(7) /spl Aring/, b=8.755(6) /spl Aring/, c=9.924(7) /spl Aring/, /spl beta/=97.39(2)/spl deg/ and V=936.23 /spl Aring//sup 3/. The relative lattice expansion upon nitrogenation is 8%. The Curie temperature T/sub C/ is 670 K and the saturation magnetization M/sub S/ is 1.22 at 5 K and 1.15 MA/m at 300 K. The anisotropy field H/sub A/ is 2.67 at 5 K and 1.65 MA/m at 300 K and the average hyperfine field is 32.5 T at 85 K and 29.6 T at 293 K. Both the parent and the nitrided compounds exhibit a complex type of magnetocrystalline anisotropy.
