The interconnection of distributed networks over satellite links employing ATM cell based transmission can be used in the development of emerging high speed networks such as the ITU-T Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network. Issues relating to the segmentation and reassembly mechanisms required to provide the conversion between the formats used within frames on the local area networks and the cells employed over the satellite connection and the management of memory to provide buffer capacity represent challenges with regard to the design of a system providing the bridging services within such an environment. The paper describes the hardware and software architecture of a device constructed to meet these requirements and discusses significant issues addressed during the development
