Competitive alliances with information technology-the Australian retail banking experience

An approach is evaluated for obtaining a competitive advantage through the use of information technology. This approach is the use of competitive alliances. The evidence and examples are drawn from a study of the use of competitive information systems in the Australian retail banking industry during the 1970s. Three forms of competitive alliance were originally proposed-coalition, consortium and servicer. In practice the coalition form has proved to be the most popular. Successes and problems for all three forms are discussed, and it is concluded that none of them guarantee success.<
