EDIF is an emerging de facto industry standard for the interchange of electronic design information. Its eventual aim is to encompass all the data required to describe the design and manufacture of electronic equipments. The initial specification, published in March 1985, focuses on the transfer of basic data for semi-custom very large-scale integration design, but planned extensions in later versions will include printed circuit board design as well. This paper presents an overview of the language, the current state and future trends.
