The integration of hitherto separate aspects of traditional manufacturing presents a formidable task in the development of computer integrated manufacturing systems. It is a problem which needs to be approached from many different points of view, and this is reflected by the different backgrounds of the team participating in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's CIM Program, which has as one of its aims the creation of a centre of CIM expertise.
