This paper proposes multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) as a methodology to solve electrical machine design problem. The possibility and needs in performing such kind of approach in electrical engineering application are evaluated. Permanent magnet motor optimal design problem is chosen and three formulations are tested to point out their advantages and drawbacks.
