The method of serial search for coarse acquisition of frequency hopped spread spectrum signals is investigated from a practical aspect. A convenient method for deriving acquisition time statistics is outlined. Search performance is optimized for minimum acquisition time by comparing search techniques and strategies, and by observing the effect of adverse environments.
