To the traditional requirements on cooling systems for switching equipment, are now added, concurrently with rising energy prices and labour costs, requirements on energy- and space-efficiency and installation- and maintenance-friendliness. This paper describes a cooling system based on water, with compact units that can be placed in the same room as the equipment to be cooled by the system. The heat transport from the switching equipment to the system is based on the well-tried principle of natural convection. The central points of this paper are the Switch Room Cooling concept, the principle of natural convection and the energy-saving free-cooling function.
