The authors describe the work that they have been undertaking in their `Virtual Electronic Library' project. Initially, two basic types of electronic book were studied: Hyper-book and Visual-book. A description of the main features of these books is included together with a particular type of Hyper-book-the `Dynamic WAIS Book'. Such books follow the same basic design principles as Hyper-books and provide a powerful publishing environment based on the acquisition of electronic texts from the Internet using the Wide Area Information Service (WAIS) protocol. The Dynamic WAIS Book allows a user to search for publicly available Internet information, retrieve it and organise it in the form of a personal virtual electronic library
