This paper presents a kind of simulation software for computing the characteristics of flowing and heat transfer in the stator bars' evaporative cooling system of large hydrogenerators. A model experiment using the real stator bar of Three Gorges' hydrogenerator was introduced also. Under experimental conditions, temperature distributions and utmost thermal load are calculated using the simulation software. Comparison between simulation and experiment results shows that the calculating results are accord with the experimental measurement to about 5 percent relative error. On the whole, the altering of the inner water-cooling system to the evaporative cooling system can completely meet the cooling demand; the simulation software is effective and reliable and can be used to the design of the evaporative cooling system for large hydro generators in the applied engineering field
