The rapid response feature of SVC can improve the steady state stability (or small signal stability) of power system, if it is located appropriately. In this paper, an index for identifying the location of SVC in large scale power system is proposed. The proposed index indicates modal controllability of the weak damping oscillatory modes. A multimachine linearized analysis for computation of the most dominant eigenvalues is done. Then, the most effective state variables on the given mode or eigenvalue are determined by participation factor analysis. The controllability of same state variable is calculated in all nodes of the network. The location index for each node is absolute value of controllability in same node. For evaluating the results, some computer simulations are done using MATLAB SIMULINK. The results demonstrate validity of proposed index.
