Aimed at developing the Internet based industrial design system, the knowledge representation and application in the industrial design process is presented. An experiment designed to capture the ‘implicit’ knowledge or specific knowledge for the knowledge-based CAD system is carried out, using the Protocol Analysis and Task Analysis method. Based on the analysis of experimental results, a product forms design thinking model is formulated, which represents design information process in two ways: bottom-up processing and top-down processing. In view of the particularity of industrial design process, the implementary framework of a knowledge-based CAD system based on Internet is structured; the methods of knowledge framework in design process, main functional modules and application flow of industrial design are developed. User can retrieve knowledge base and database of the system online and finish the concept design in the environment of the Internet.
