In wireless sensor networks, energy consumption of nodes is the most direct factor to influence the lifetime of whole network. Considering the distance between nodes and the residual energy comprehensively, we have proposed a balanced minimum energy consumption topology control algorithm (BMEC). According to the residual energy, each node chooses its parent to minimize the energy consumption on communicating path. Thus, the problem that some sensors died ahead of schedule because of forwarding data is effectively avoided. Results of simulation experiments have showed that this algorithm could not only guarantee network connectivity, but also have several nice characters such as low radio interference, low average power consuming, balanced energy consumption of whole network, and so on.
