With the development of software, hardware and network technology, the urge for geo-location based information and service, mobile GIS (geographic information system) has prevailed in todayÂ¿s life. However, limitations from the nature characters of mobile terminals, deficiency in wireless network and large volume of GIS data block an operable and quick response for a mobile GIS query. In this paper, a progressive querying method for mobile GIS query based on XQuery together with corresponding data structure is presented to increase the response. Our experiment results reveal the effective performance tradeoffs in usual situation.
