Similar to code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems, UWB systems used for multiple access communication environments have the near-far problem, which degrades system performance. To overcome this drawback, several advanced receiver structures have been proposed. Unlike the conventional UWB receiver which treats multiple access interference (MAI) as if it were AWGN, multiuser receivers treat MAI as additional information to aid in detection. We present the multistage successive interference cancellation (SIC) detectors in our proposed orthogonal on-off (O3)-based structure along with a one-shot detector to solve near-far problem and compare the most discussed receiver structures: the linear decorrelating detector (LDD) and the linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) detector.
