Estimating the modulation index of an FM signal in stationary additive noise is encountered in many applications. The authors propose a simple scheme which relies on the cyclostationarity of the FM process, and employs relevant cyclic statistics. The large sample variance expression of the modulation index estimator is also derived. Numerical examples corroborate the theoretical results
