We are designing optical packet and path integration node toward new generation networks. The node contributes to high-quality service that cannot be provided in the current Internet (e.g., bandwidth guaranteed service) as well as best effort services. The node also contributes to energy savings because optical packet switching is introduced and part of complex packet switching functions shifts to simple optical circuit switching functions. This paper reviews our work and shows an example of energy saving by the node architecture.
