A semirigorous analysis of rib waveguides embedded in air is proposed. The analysis is based upon a scalar analysis and two different vectorial correction schemes, through either a perturbation formula or a scalar calculation with modified effective dimensions. The scalar field is computed with a very efficient spectral technique. The method converges rapidly, and it compares favorably with recent work on rib waveguides. It can be extended to other planar structures, such as ridge waveguides
