A new low-cost high-performance mechanical optical fiber splicing system for construction and restoration in the subscriber loop

Fiber splicing costs and requirements for the subscriber loop are considered. A mechanical splicing system that can meet these requirements is presented, and its operating principles and installation procedures are described. Results of internal testing of the splice are provided. The splicing system has been produced commercially.<
