p-nitrophenol (PNP) are an important and common environmental pollutants. In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa HS-D38 strain was selected to degrade PNP, and the degradation characteristics were investigated. Results showed that HS-D38 could use PNP as the sole carbon, nitrogen and energy source, and the degradation conditions including temperature, pH and initial concentration of PNP were optimized. The optimal temperature of PNP degradation was at 35degC,and in the range of pH 6.0-7.0, HS-D38 strain grew well and PNP could be efficiently degraded. Oxygen could accelerate PNP degradation. HS-D38 strain could grow and degrade PNP in an MSM medium under 500 mgL-1 PNP, and grew well at the concentration range of 100 mgL-1~ 400 mgL-1. In the optimum condition, SOOmgL-1 PNP could be completely degrade within 10 h by HS-D38. HPLC and UV-visible spectra analysis indicated that the key degradation intermediate metabolite was aim at hydroquinone. Some other aromatics compounds including phenol, p-benzenediol, naphthalene, aniline, 1,2,3-benzenetriol and nitrobenzene could be degraded by HS-D38.
