Both electrode arc and high-frequency induction methods have been used hitherto to transfer high powers into low-pressure gases or objects within a low-pressure gas environment. A new method is described whereby a toroidal arc permits the transfer of power into a gas environment with a higher efficiency and a lower contamination than was obtainable with previous methods.
