This paper investigates the performance of voltage regulating relays used to control on-load tap changing transformers in a meshed distribution system. Real-time digital simulation, together with hardware-in-loop connection of the actual relays, is used to investigate the performance of the relays under practical conditions in an actual distribution network. In particular, the paper focuses on the performance of an adaptive tracking feature provided on the relays that allows their settings to be adjusted in response to slow changes in network conditions.
