In this paper we describe knowledge-aided signal processing to improve the performance of radar systems operating in complex clutter environments. The paper describes two paradigms based on either direct or indirect application of prior knowledge. A physics-based, knowledge- aided, parametric approach to clutter estimation is discussed. We provide numerical analysis demonstrating the performance enhancements offered by the proposed methods relative to baseline techniques when operating in the presence of heterogeneous clutter.
