We demonstrate how intrachannel as well as interchannel nonlinear penalties can be effectively controlled and minimized through the use of dense dispersion management in combination with amplifier site compensation. When applying the ideas to a system operating at 171.2 Gb/s (160 Gb/s+7% overhead), we show that effective wavelength-division-multiplexed transmission can be achieved over more than 1000 km with conservative terrestrial system parameters and without distributed Raman amplification.
