A novel switch-mode charger controller IC was proposed to improve the charging efficiency of VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead-Acid) battery and save its life. Cooperated with an MCU, the controller IC could provide four charging modes: trickle charge, bulk charge, over-charge and float charge according to demands of battery in different charging phases, which results in efficient charging and reliable protecting both battery and charge system. The controller IC was designed and fabricated in 1.5 mum BCD technology. Experimental results showed that all expectations were implemented and the performances of the chip met specifications well.
