Well-defined tools are the primary requirement to support the industrial transition to service-oriented architecture. SOA realized through Web service standards is an extraordinary improvement over prior technology. The value is evident in industry's relatively rapid and broad uptake of Web services. Enterprises, system integrators, and packaged application vendors (for example, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management) are all investing in SOA. They expect a return on investment, and case studies have emerged that demonstrate the benefits of Web-service-based SOA technology for enterprise applications.
