Significant progress of industrial PWB technology can be expected in the near future due to the need of a solution for continuously increasing data rates between components on board level. One promising solution on the base of optical data lines is introduced whereby a VCSEL is used as transmitter embedded in an optical polymer in which a waveguide is "written" by laser processing the polymer with a TPA process. A demonstrator board has been fabricated and a thermal feasibility under operation conditions is studied to prove the suitability of this technology for industrial application. According to our investigation even under worst case condition a thermal resistance of less than 0.5 K per milliwatt seams realistic.
