The nuclear physics group at the University of Illinois has implemented a data acquisition system using modified versions of the Concurrent Pascal and Sequential Pascal languages. The design of the assembly language kernel, which was written to support this system on the Perkin-Elmer 3220 computer, is presented. Design tradeoffs affecting efficiency, ease of use, and software compatibility are discussed.
