The UWB (ultra wide band) technology is ideally suited for the development of FCS (fieldbus control system) in industrial environments because of desirable features such as high data rates, low power consumption, precise ranging capabilities, resistance to multi-path fading, and penetration of dense objects. But, owing to a lot of short packets in the FCS applications and high channel acquisition time in UWB, the delay is larger than in other application. This paper studies delay and slot utilization about FCS based on UWB. The slot utilization is defined as the fraction of time that useful data is transmitted per slot. We add a packet optimization layer (POL) in the model of FCS based on UWB and introduce to aggregate multiple upper-layer packets idea in the POL. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed special packet assembly mechanism for FCS based on UWB. Simulation results show that it is effective to improve on performance of the delay and slot utilization in the FCS based on UWB.
