Increase of Light Emission from the Positive Column of Argon/Mercury Discharges and from Wall Phosphor When the Wall Is Negatively Biased

Light emission from the positive column of argon/mercury discharges increases slightly when the envelope wall is biased negatively from its floating potential. Phosphor emission, excited by ultraviolet radiation from the column, also increases. Possible reasons for the effect are examined.
