Integration architectures for enterprise applications use adapter and middleware technologies to integrate remote systems and to provide uniform access. Different middleware platforms use different middleware and adapter technologies, which all are incompatible to each other. This requires to write new adapters even if adapters to the remote systems already exist, however, in incompatible technologies. Our formerly introduced visualization approach enables reuse of adapters and even of whole middleware systems. In this paper, we evaluate different approaches to integration architectures for enterprise applications and give a methodology and a guide for deciding which approach to use in which integration scenario.
