Although the camera phone market has experienced exponential growth in recent years, the applications of built-in camera on the mobile phone still have not progressed as anticipated. One of the main reasons is the low resource on the mobile phone that hinder the deployment of many time consuming image processing tasks. In this paper, a fundamental image processing problem namely image segmentation has been revisited for adapting to a low resource computing device, and a novel image region extraction scheme is proposed. The region extraction algorithm takes into account the constraints exhibited in the mobile phone captured images and the low computing resource made available for applications, and can achieve reasonable result in both performance and speed in our experiments.
