The paper proposes a control scheme to mitigate inter area oscillations in large power systems. Our control strategy consists of an online determination of critical oscillation's frequency and phase, and a synthesis of the modulation signal for a SVC that uses a bang-bang controller. The algorithm to determine the controller's exact switching times is provided. Simulation results show that the controller's performance is robust to changes in system's operating points. Moreover, the proposed control scheme allows several controllers to react simultaneously, therefore better damping effects can be achieved.
