A laboratory demonstration is reported in which low-cost optoelectronic devices are used for transmission over 9/125 ¿m single-mode fibre at 2 Mbit/s. This novel system has been designed for application in local network and office systems where optical device cost constraints present severe restrictions on the technology options.
