This paper discusses an approach to produce a quality software structure through the phase of software maintenance. Software clustering is widely used when software systems are large and complex to improve program understanding and ensure quality maintenance of these systems. The paper makes a brief description of the works in the field of software clustering, summarizes the perspective research directions in this area, underlines the fundamental problems in software clustering area and presents some new results produced with the heuristic clustering algorithm, developed by the author.
