Referring to specialty of video sequences in coal mine underground, we bring forwards the full direction search (FDS) based fast motion estimation algorithm by analyzing the possibility distribution of motion vector in diverse motion complexity of video sequences. After simulation on the video sequences of coalmining underground and the common standard video sequences and comparing FDS to other popular algorithms DS and HEXBS, it shows that the FDS algorithm can reduce much the computation complexity and encoding time (6% to 15%) with the same even better video quality. So, it can meet the requirements of video communication in coal mine underground.
