A new encoding technique used in Mach-Zehnder joint transform correlator based on the HSV color space is proposed for color pattern recognition. This method utilizes a rearrangement of the reference image along with the HSV color space before forming the input image. Moreover, we use a minimum average correlation energy technique with Lagrange multipliers to synthesize a reference function. By the combination of these techniques, we can improve the performance and reduce the sidelobes. The presented scheme can effectively detect targets in simulated as well as real-life input scenes without large size liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM). LCSLMs in this structure are reflective devices. Simulation results are shown to verify the performance of this system
