The purpose of this study is to design and develop distributed control software for flexible manufacturing system (FMS) by means of a service-oriented approach. We present FMS communication model based on MMS and Web services and provides service-oriented control software architecture for FMS. Service-oriented control software design of MMS concepts in Web services environment using Unified Modeling Language (UML) is discussed in detail. The combination of MMS and Web services can bring platform-independent communication capability and increase flexibility, reconfigurability and interoperability of FMS control software. In particular, to verify the validity of the proposed service-oriented control software architecture, a prototype system has been achieved, Its server software and client software are programmed in Java with Borland JBuilder 9 being the development environment
