This paper examines the use of overhead power transmission lines as electromagnetic sensors for detecting partial discharge discharges caused by defective power transmission equipment based on both the experimental and simulation study. The experimental results show that a small amount of electromagnetic energy is coupled onto nearby power line conductor during the event of discharge. In order to demonstrate the viability of detecting this electromagnetic energy on a long transmission line, computer simulation based on 330 KV transmission line that stretches for 189 km was performed.
