The application of a Static Var Compensator (SVC) in a longitudinal power system is presented and the technical studies performed to evaluate its effect on system operation are described. Steady state analysis is based on the combination of SVC and system characteristics. Using this approach changes in loading conditions and SVC adjustable parameters can be easily analysed. Results of simulations are presented that show the effect of SVC reactive power support on the system transient performance. Cases with supplementary controls to protect the system against SVC loss are also included.
