The authors present the software architecture of the SISAS distributed system, and illustrate how the system facilitates the development of server-based distributed personal communications applications that realize the personal communications vision. The architecture can be easily mapped onto emerging and future architectures for information networking, such as Bellcore's Information Networking Architecture (INA) effort or the TINA initiative. The computation model supported by SISAS is described along with the functional components in SISAS. The interaction between the components in various service acquisition phases is discussed, and a distributed personal messaging application developed in SISAS is presented
