The block multiplexing concept for constructing families of codes for optical ladder network correlators is analysed. A family of block multiplexing codes exhibiting optical orthogonality (crosscorrelation of at most one) is described and a very efficient technique for code generation/correlation discussed. Due to their low crosscorrelation, efficient generation and extremely simple control algorithms, block multiplexing codes could be candidates for future asynchronous incoherent CDMA networks. The concept allows many new families of codes suitable for ladder networks to be generated systematically
