This paper describes some new results with respect to the classic problem of the component-to-pin ratio for hierarchical (heterogeneous) systems. Generalization of Rent's rule, providing greater accuracy and extending the domain of applicability to hierarchical systems, is presented. Based on this new rule, estimations of average interconnection lengths for 1D- and 2D-cases are deduced. The new estimations have been found to produce very satisfactory results on test and industrial systems
