The authors report the transverse mode and polarisation characteristics of a novel 1.52 μm vertical-cavity laser that utilises an InGaAsP strain-compensated quantum-well active layer and two AlAs/GaAs quarter-wave mirrors. The devices exhibit 4 mA room-temperature pulsed threshold current and 14 mW output power
