Most telcos are in the process of deploying fiber technologies in the access, and are considering evolving their network to broadband and to wireless services to the end user. The paper reviews access technology trends with the positioning of 2 GHz wireless, will discuss hybrid fiber/coax (HFC), a broadband architecture that is receiving a lot of attention presently, and will provide views on how wireless can be integrated with HFC. Emphasis will be placed on the opportunities and challenges that face telcos for achieving a cost-effective deployment of a network, while meeting the demands of the customer for larger bandwidths and for mobility
