The optimum design and resultant performance of a direct detection optical receiver for a terrestrial line of sight free space application has been outlined. The good sensitivity and high dynamic range of the bootstrapped preamplifier have allowed the establishment of an experimental 155.52 Mbit/s link over a 4 km path in London
